Maryland Department of Aging's Innovative Durable Medical Equipment Re-Use Program

The Maryland Durable Medical Equipment Re-Use program, implemented by the Maryland Department of Aging, has improved the quality of life and independence of thousands of Maryland residents by providing durable medical equipment (DME) -  including wheelchairs, walkers, hospital beds, shower benches, and much more - free to those in need, regardless of disability, age, or income level.

The DME Re-Use program collects equipment via donation from several satellite sites around the state.  Since the program began two years ago at a 51,000-square-foot warehouse located in Cheltenham, Md., some 23,572 pieces of DME have been collected, sanitized, repaired, and processed - with the added benefit of keeping some 664,892 pounds of waste out of Maryland landfills.

Far too often, the cost of durable medical equipment is a serious burden. This burden falls not only on uninsured Marylanders, but on the insured whose insurance won’t approve the equipment or whose approval is delayed. Maryland DME Reuse, powered by generous equipment donations from all over the state, is stepping up to help alleviate this burden, improving the mobility and quality of life of Maryland residents

For Maryland residents in need of DME, complete and submit a DME Request Form, then an appointment can be scheduled to pick up equipment. To find out more about what equipment the program is collecting and distributing, go to dme.maryland.gov or call 240-230-8000.

The Gift of Mobility

Our program is reaching Maryland residents of all ages. Meet just a few of our durable medical equipment recipients and learn how this program helped each of them.

After a lower leg amputation, Sheila had difficulty and pain walking distances with her prosthetic. Sheila requested a power scooter from Maryland DME Re-Use after learning her insurance didn't cover the cost. Sheila was delighted to receive this power scooter and is now able to navigate her home and take independent trips to the grocery store and to medical appointments.

Herbert was able to get around his home using a walker, but he was unable to walk long distances outside his home - he missed going out to community events. With this power wheelchair, he can now safely leave his home and attend the community events he was missing.

After having surgery on her foot, Janice had difficulty walking short distances and relied on assistance from friends and family. Since the equipment her podiatrist recommended was not covered by her insurance, she reached out to Maryland DME Re-Use and received a knee scooter, allowing her to move without pain and regain her independence.
