As the hub of most nutrition and health promotion activities, Senior Centers provide a vital link for older adults looking to take charge of their health and remain independent and active in the community. Senior centers offer a range of programs including meal service, arts and crafts, continuing education, health promotion and disease prevention services, and transportation opportunities.
The Maryland Department of Aging has allocated more than $750,000 in FY25 funds to support innovative programs and critical operating needs for senior centers across the state. Each county receives funding based on the number of Marylanders aged 60 and older who live there, while Caroline, Cecil, Harford, and Worcester counties won additional competitive funds through the FY25 Senior Center Operating Fund (SCOF) for innovative programs that serve historically underserved communities. Celebrated every year in September, National Senior Center Month is a time to shine a light on senior centers, showing the entire nation how vital they are to the health and well-being of a community. Senior centers provide countless hours of support and encouragement to older adults, and have become integral to health care delivery in our communities by offering a place for older adults to discover their unique interests, talents, and aspirations.
